Welcome to my blog!

Welcome to my blog! My name is Valeriia, I am a student in DMUIC Media and I created this blog to show my development in digital arts. I will do Performing Arts after finishing this year and of course I'm a big cinema and theatre lover. I managed to have both cinema and theatre experience but I can't choose one that I prefer more. It is two totally different worlds which I want to learn about all the time and develop myself in them both. However, I also enjoy doing photography, exploring photoshops, playing the guitar, dancing, editing videos and creating posts in social media. I love writing my thoughts on a specific topic or just to share my feelings with others in my free time. In this blog I want to create my own works, research others' ones and gain new skills in digital arts.

I got inspired by lots of films and performances. However, a film "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is the first which comes to my mind and I would definitely like to share it with you. It is a 1961 American romantic comedy film directed by Blake Edwards and starring my favourite actress Audrey Hepburn. The film is based on a novella of the same name written by Truman Capote. The story tells us about naïve, 'party girl' who is used to a dizzying, free lifestyle and she is falling in love with a struggling writer who just moved into new apartments. It seems to be a typical classical story however I do like it because of the way this film was made. I am talking about this film because I love classics especially 1950s ones. As for me, it has a special atmosphere in it and it is made more deeply than most of contemporary films.

Audrey Hepburn is gorgeous in this film and most other ones as well. I do love her manner of acting especially her ability to be so diverse. She can be go from romantic to comedian very naturally which impresses me a lot. I would definitely like to get this skill too as a professional.

Filming took place on Fifth Avenue outside the "Tiffany&Co", in New York City and on the Paramount Studios in Hollywood in 1960. It would not seem so but the film's opening-sequence was very hard to shoot. It was simple in concept but other obstacles such as crowd control, Audrey's dislike of pastries and an accident made this scene a challenge.

There was another interesting fact about the music in the film. The song 'Moon River' written by Henry Mancini and Johny Mercer was sung by Audrey Hepburn in the film. However, they argued to remove this song as it would not fit the film's pace. According to Time magazine, Mancini "sets off his melodies with a walking bass, extends them with choral and string variations, varies them with the brisk sounds of combo jazz. 'Moon River' is sobbed by a plaintive harmonica, repeated by strings, hummed and then sung by the chorus, finally resolved with the harmonica again." It is so interesting how some things that we are not sure about their success become then one of the main film features. Later this song was nominated for 6 Grammy Awards and won 5 of them. As for me a moment with Hepburn playing guitar was one of the most sensual and lyrical moments.

  1. Welcome to the course Valeriia. Breakfast at Tiffany's is indeed a wonderful film, and its great that a film made so long ago is still an inspiration to new film makers.
You know the film well and have included some great research, and included references where necessary.
I understand that this is a big inspiration to you but it would be nice to have more about you.
