Rory Lewis is a British photographer, who is known for his headshot and portrait photography of celebrities, including royal and military portraits. His special approach makes his pictures look like paintings with the help of artificial studio light. He breaks photography rules and makes his portraits genuine by using his imagination in the process of creating a composition. Rory Lewis also got his degree in History which explains his strong interest in authentic photography. His works were exhibited in galleries all over the world, including The National Portrait Gallery in London.
The first photo is a portrait of David Lewis, well-known British actor. Rory Lewis told that it took him a while to make David agree to this sitting photo shoot but eventually
"the Sitting was very memorable, David was astonishing, creating expressions and emotions that almost hold the viewer. After the Session I contacted the National Portrait Gallery who acquired one of the images for their Permanent Collection", - Rory Lewis. Here is a collaboration of both brilliant actor and good photographer. The portrait shows us an actor's greatness and talent who is able to be so emotional and deep with his view even through the photo. The light positions an actor in the centre and his face is clearly shown very close to us.
The next photo is a portrait of Andy Serkis, an English actor and director who came to Lewis to get authentic portraits. Andy was interviewed during his photo shoot about his impression of Rory Lewis.
"I really appreciate the lengths he goes to to capture this simple version, this truthful historical version of his subject. And yeah, I love his lighting. I think it's really magical and yet at the same time it's a classicism about it, but at the same time it feels very contemporary and I think it's beautiful" - Andy Serkis. As a result, we can see a photo which brightly shows a director. We see a composition which associates us with a stage, we see a gold mask and a posture that shows us a typical director. The light and colours of the mask and background matches very good and we can see director as a main character placed in a circle of the light.
In this picture above we can see a military woman who is very serious, perhaps sad and doesn't want to look into the camera. We can feel the power of this woman and a fear at the same time. The light is approached the way that she is located in the centre of image. Composition and frame works well and portrait feels deeper because of the closeness to the personality.
Rory Lewis considers the portrait of David Cameron, an ex Prime Minister of the UK, to be his best photo. The picture was taken after a year of David's resigning and the theme was concerned his political aspirations and thoughts.
